Collecting recordings
- Make sure you have access to digital recording equipment that makes a clear recording and test equipment before going into the field to ensure it works. Download and print a copy of the data sheet to make sure you record all the information required about the site.
- Find places where frogs are calling such as streams, rivers, ponds, wetlands and waterways. Ideal times to hear frog call are at dusk on warm still nights before or after rain.
- Record site and time details on the datasheet.
- State your name and location on the recording and then make a 30 second recording of the call. If it is a complicated call or chorus you can make a slightly longer recording, although keep it to under a maximum of 2 mins.
- Ensure the frog calls can be heard clearly in your recording before uploading it.
Hints
- Digital voice recorders will take the best electronic recordings as they are designed as an audio recording device. Many digital cameras and mobile phone can also be used to record sounds and download onto your computer. A detachable microphone that you can direct towards the call will assist in making better quality recordings.
- Try to avoid making a recording when there is a lot of other background noise. For example, wind and traffic on a recording make it very difficult to hear frogs calling.
- Think like a frog! Don’t talk or move around when making the recording. These noises are often picked up better than frogs and they may also make the frogs stop calling.
Registering with the Frog Atlas as a past participant of the SA Frog Census
Use the login facilities at the top of each page to join the site.
During login you will be asked to select a box indicating that you have previously participated in the Frog Census in SA. By selecting this option, your information will be manually matched to your existing data (excluding that which was collected in 2007 which is being compiled and added to the database). This will occur within 48hrs of your request for membership being lodged (excluding weekends).
Once matched with past data, you will be able to add your 2008 data, as well as view your exisitng sites and what frogs you previously recorded.
Submitting calls
- Register to add information to the database and to receive email updates on the frog census.
- Please submit recording as MP3 (.mp3) of less than 5MB. As your recording only needs to be 30 seconds (max 2 minutes for a chorus of frogs) your MP3 file is not likely to exceed this.
- Edit your calls down to the best sound grab in your recording. MP3 players will have software for downloading and edit software. Also see FAQ for information about editing and converting digital files.
If your recording is in a different format there are free online programs to convert your recording to MP3 – search for “MP3 converter”
Please note that this section of the website will be active by mid-December.
Training for analysing calls
- During registration select analyse calls and the region(s) you are interested in working in.
- Use the call library to learn the calls of the frog species in your region(s).
- Go to the training section and try your identification skills on some sample calls. From the multiple choice options, select the species heard calling – remember multiple species may be calling together. After you submit your answer you will be given the list of species present in that recording.
- Once confident that you can identify the frogs of your region(s), go to the testing section and identify 35 calls. To be able to analyse calls for the Frog Atlas you need to correctly identify 33 or more calls.
- If you correctly identified 33 or more calls – Congratulations! You are now able to analyse calls for the Frog Atlas.
- If you correctly identified less than 33 calls, you can revise the calls in the library or training section and then re-sit the test a further two times. Otherwise you can still help gather information for the Frog Atlas by collecting and uploading recordings and site information which can then be analysed by other Frog Atlas participants.
Please note that this section of the website is currently not completed and will be completed in early 2009.
