Neobatrachus pictus

Mallee Spadefoot Toad

Description: The species is moderately sized, stockily built with short limbs and is generally deep olive with darker markings on the head and body. The eye is a distinguishing characteristic: it is prominent and has a vertical pupil. The ear is not visible. The fingers are cylindrical and lack webbing. The toes are extensively webbed. The skin is smooth, except during the mating season when the male will develop tiny black thorns. It also has a black horn-like 'shovel' on the foot which aids burrowing.  Unlike most species the female is smaller than the male.

Male size: 46-58 mm
Female size: 48-55 mm

Breeding:  Opportunistic breeder that breeds after heavy rains.  About 1000 yellow eggs are laid in a chain entwined with submerged vegetation.

SA Distribution: Eyre and Yorke peninsulas, Kangaroo Island, the lower Flinders Ranges, Adelaide Hills, Murrary Valley and south-east SA.

Habitat: Found in a wide range of habitats including mallee and farmland.  Burrows underground and emerges to feed at night.

Call: Call is a long rapid pulsed musical trill.
