Main's Frog

Cyclorana maini

Western Collared Frog

Description: Its skin is usually smooth or slightly warty and may vary from pale brown to dull green in colour.  Similar to the Knife-footed Frog but has a dark lateral head stripe.

Male size: 35-46 mm
Female size: 39-47 mm

Breeding: Breeding follows rain. Large irregular clumps of eggs are laid in water.

Call: Call is like the noise of ambulance siren or bleating of a sheep.

Distribution: Limited to the extreme north west of South Australia and is found in some of the driest parts of the State. It is a burrowing frog which spends much of its time underground conserving water. As a result it is rarely encountered except after rains when they emerged in large numbers to breed.

Habitat: Found in open grassland, claypans, lightly forested country and temporary marshes.
